A moon that feels like home

You are far from home. The room is quiet. A pale patch of light catches your eye before you have found words for the feeling. That small shift—from seeing something to remembering someone—is the movement of Li Bai’s Quiet Night Thoughts.
Moonlight before my bed—
could it be frost upon the ground?
I lift my head toward the bright moon;
I lower it, thinking of home.
Notice how little has to happen. A head lifts, then lowers. The gaze travels outward to the moon and inward to memory. The poem does not need to tell us the name of a town or the face of a person. The last two characters, 故乡, leave room for the reader’s own home.
Read the two movements aloud, if you like: 举头, 低头. Their balance gives the poem a quiet rhythm. The contrast is more useful here than a complicated rule: up toward what is in front of you, down toward what you carry with you. This is one way to read the poem, rather than its only possible meaning.
A familiar scene can hold a private meaning. On another night, a window, a streetlamp, or the smell of dinner might do what the moon does here. What ordinary thing makes you think of home? You can save a line without answering; the question is yours to keep.
